The correct height for hanging wall art
FlockPhotography wall art should be hung so that the centre of the image is at standing eye level, about 150 cms or 60 inches. In living and dining rooms images can be hung at eye level when seated. To hang wall art at the correct height follow these steps for a framed piece:
- Measure the distance between the string at full tension and the top of the frame.
- Measure the height of your frame and divide the result in half.
- From the floor, measure up the wall to approximately 150cms or 60 inches and make a light pencil mark.
- From the pencil mark, measure upward the distance recorded in step 2 and make a second light pencil mark.
- From this pencil mark, measure downward the distance recorded in step 1.
- Place nail and hang.
For Perspex art:
- Measure the distance between the top and bottom of the Perspex and divide by two.
- From the floor, measure up the wall to approximately 150cms or 60 inches and make a light pencil mark.
- From the pencil mark, measure upward and downward the distance recorded in step 1 and make a second light pencil mark.
- These marks are the levels at which the Perspex fastenings should be attached. See the how to hang Perspex art information to attach the piece to the wall.
For canvases:
- Measure the distance between the top and bottom of the canvas and divide by two.
- From the floor, measure up the wall to approximately 150cms or 60 inches and make a light pencil mark.
- From the pencil mark, measure upward. This is where you should place the nail and hang
General tips for arranging wall art
Creating a group of FlockPhotography on a wall is an excellent way to create an interesting focal point in a room, however, it requires planning. There are some general rules that will help you get the right arrangement of wall art for your living space.
- It is always best to try arrangements of wall art on the floor first before you get the hammer out.
- Tightly spaced arrangements should have the pieces of art spaced about 5 cms or 2 inches apart.
- Normal spacing for wall art arrangements is 10 to 15cms or 4 to 6 inches apart (about the size of your hand with your fingers closed).
Arranging odd numbers of wall art
In general arranging wall art in horizontal lines tend to elongate, widen and as a result emphasize a casual and relaxed mood. These horizontalk line arrangements work well with odd numbers of wall art. Working horizontally, as in following the line of a sofa wall or a hall entrance, FlockPhotography wall art grouped in odd numbers are visually balanced, giving volume without crowding.
Arranging even numbers of wall art
- In large spaces you can tightly group an even number of wall art to balance the space, such as on a high wall in a room with vaulted ceilings.
- In small spaces tightly group an even number of pictures, such as a galley kitchen or a tight stair landing, to give a window effect. Enhance the effect by using light colors and slender frames.
- The trick to evenly numbered collections is tight grouping (spaced about 5 cms or 2 inches apart) so that pieces appear as one statement rather than a series of small comments.
Symmetrical arrangements of wall art
- Choose wall art of a similar style, subject matter, size and choose similar frames then consider a symmetrical grouping to create a mirror-image balance.
- Symmetry adds balance and formality to an arrangement of wall art and is generally pleasing and calming to the observer.
- Symmetrical collections are often used to create the popular gallery effects, above large pieces of furniture, such as sofas and above mantles.
Asymmetrical arrangements of wall art
- Asymmetrical arrangements of wall art can promote a casual and fun look for informal settings.
- When hanging two larger pieces of art together, try lowering one and raising the other, so the top and bottom don’t match.
- Choose a selection of dissimilar wall art with at least one common element then you can group them together assymetrically for organic balance to the arrangement.
- Group larger and smaller pieces, to create interest and energy. For example, hang a large focal piece, such as a beach sunset, with two smaller pieces, such as beach close ups.
- Combine horizontal and vertical wall art in the same grouping. Hang a tall architectural print with two panoramic skyline photos.
Museum arrangement of wall art
To create a museum gallery effect, visualize a horizontal line at 150cms or 60 inches above the floor and use this as the center point for all of your wall art, no matter the size.

Modern art gallery arrangement of wall art
- To create a modern art gallery feel, particularly nice in corridors, hallways etc., give each piece of wall ample breathing room.
- Stand at the center of the first piece of wall art then move to the side a couple of paces. This is a good center for the next piece of wall art.
Tips for arranging wall art with furniture
- Fill 2/3 of the Wall Space – When placing art above furniture such as sofas, chair groupings or console tables, "eyeball" the amount of space between the furniture and the ceiling, then allocate 2/3's of that space for wall art.
- Height of hanging above furniture – Hanging wall art too high above a piece of furniture can leave both pieces feeling disconnected. A good guideline is 12 to 22 cms or 5 to 9 inches above the furniture. When hanging wall art above a sofa, remember to leave arm space above the sofa back.
- Pictures & oversized furniture – Oversized furniture calls for robust pieces of wall art to strike a balance. For visual weight, consider a grouping of 2 or 3 pieces of wall art that carry strong visual weight through color or a wider moulding and mat combination.
